As autumn settles in and a new academic year takes shape, campuses across our connection are once again alive with energy: students arriving, conversations unfolding, and new possibilities beginning to emerge. This season holds the energy of anticipation for what lies ahead. It is a time when direction becomes clearer, when commitments deepen, and when the work of becoming takes root in steady and meaningful ways.
At the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation, our vision to make higher education more affordable for students attending United Methodist-related schools continues. It is our privilege to walk alongside students – supporting not only their education, but their sense of calling and purpose. We are continually inspired by the students we serve who are preparing to lead, serve, and engage the world thoughtfully and with courage.
Grace Rogers first became a UMHEF scholarship recipient as a student at Hendrix College. “Your generosity opened doors for me that I would have never imagined,” she said. “Because of the financial support of UMHEF scholarships, the financial burden of my college education was so light that I did not have to worry about debt.”
Grace continued to receive support from UMHEF as she answered her call to ministry. This spring, she graduated from Wesley Theologial Seminary with a Master of Divinity. In June, she was commissioned as a Provisional Elder in The United Methodist Church and has been appointed to serve as the pastor of Quapaw Quarter UMC in Little Rock, Arkansas. To Grace, every scholarship she received represents her life’s work. ”I treat the scholarships that I receive as a holy responsibility to continue the life work of the person or people who gave so generously to support my education. Thank you.”
Stories like Grace’s reflect something we witness every day: when students are supported, they are able to more fully engage both their learning and their calling. Last year, UMHEF awarded more than $1.7 million in scholarships to nearly 650 students across our connection.
Your generosity is part of that work, reflecting a shared commitment to forming leaders who will serve in churches, classrooms, and communities of every kind. It is a way of participating (quietly yet powerfully) in lives that will extend care, wisdom, and hope far beyond the campus.
Scripture reminds us, “We are what God has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10). In this season, we see those good works taking shape in real and tangible ways.
